How to maintain and enjoy your PVC membrane patio this winter?

No matter what part of Canada you live in, you will probably want to use your patio or deck at certain times of winter; whether it is simply to circulate there to get to your front door or to share good times with the family around a good hot chocolate.

This is why we want to share with you a few simple tips to properly maintain your surface throughout the winter. This will allow you to make your patio accessible all season long while protecting your long-term investment.

Before there is too much snow

A few things you can do if there is still no snow on your surface, or there is only a small buildup that you can clean with a broom. However, before putting everything away, don’t forget to take into consideration that your patio could be used for a few activities during the winter. Keep in place what could be useful to you.

First, be sure to put away any furniture you don’t plan on using in the next few months. This will allow you to avoid cleaning accumulations of dirt or rust stains when spring comes.

Also remove any organic debris such as leaves and branches, which also usually leave small spots when left on a surface. More work avoided for the spring.

If the days are not too cold yet, clean your surface with a mixture of water and dish soap, using a soft brush and rinse generously.

Once winter sets in

Do not hesitate to remove the snow with a plastic shovel. On the other hand, avoid shovels with metal corners, which could damage the PVC membrane.

You can use de-icing salt or sand on your surface. If you use these products during the winter, do not forget to clean your terrace as soon as spring shows up; this will prevent them from becoming embedded in the membrane and changing its color.

Have you thought about getting an outdoor heater for the winter? There are several models on the market in a different price range. A mini fireplace that sits on a table could also enhance your winter evenings.

Adding outdoor lighting is also a nice way to add atmosphere when you gather with the family over a nice cup of hot chocolate. A well-configured outdoor string light can create an inviting atmosphere that will make you want to enjoy your patio.

Simple outdoor decorations are an additional way to make the family want to enjoy the outdoors longer. Bright colors will add life to your setups and sturdy plastic plants will have the potential to spruce up the space.

You can also think of ways to cut off access to the wind. Consult a renovation specialist if you lack inspiration.
